When I reflect on 2020 I am reminded of the Arbor Knot, which is a type of knot used for fishing. When tension builds on the rope, the knot becomes stronger, improving the success of catching fish. In many ways, this is a good analogy for 2020. Last year was a difficult one for many as we mourned the loss of a loved one, a job, a graduation, or an experience. Although our metaphorical “rope” was under tension and stress due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it made us stronger as an organization and better able to confront the challenges that our members are facing.
As a credit union we found many bright spots in 2020 including a successful merger with Motor City Co-op Credit Union, which provided new and expanded products and services to members. We implemented strategies to live out our core values by quickly responding to the COVID-19 crisis. During the height of the pandemic we wrote 131 PPP Loans, 339 zero percent interest Member Relief Loans totaling $729,475 and deferred payments on 1,259 loans. Our staff worked tirelessly to quickly pivot and address our member’s needs and for that I am truly grateful.
We realize that many in our region are under financial pressure and our local non-profits are struggling as well. Part of our role as a credit union is to live out our values and make positive change in our community. We are proud to be a lead supporter of MCREST’s Returning Home Campaign. This campaign will provide assistance and resources for those who are homeless, especially during this crucial time when many families are experiencing financial difficulties.
Credit unions were conceived out of the crucible of the Great Depression and our purpose is never more apparent than when times are difficult. We are hopeful at what this new year will bring and are ever grateful for your support during these challenging times for all. Know that we are continually evaluating new opportunities for innovation and new services to add convenience and safety.
