Beware of Tech Support Scams Disguised as Security Alerts

If you see a sudden pop-up or urgent message claiming your computer is infected — especially one that says it’s from Microsoft, Apple, or Geek Squad — don’t click or call. It’s likely a tech support scam.

Scammers create fake warnings to make you panic and trust them. They often claim there’s a virus or issue with your device, then try to sell you fake tech support services. Some may even ask to remotely access your computer, putting your personal info at risk.

Here’s how to protect yourself:

  • Real tech companies won’t ask you to call a number from a pop-up.
  • Don’t click suspicious links. Instead, close the message and update your antivirus software.
  • Need help? Contact a trusted company using information from their official website — never from a pop-up.
  • In-person help from a store you trust is a safe option too.

Talking about scams helps stop them. Share with friends and family — especially those who might be more vulnerable to scare tactics. If you spot a tech support scam, report it at: ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
